Bring a Lottie file into Motion Desk safely

Intermediate 5 min

See what converting a Lottie animation into an editable Motion Desk project changes before it replaces your work.

Lottie files from other tools can carry far more than Motion Desk edits: curved keyframes, nested groups, markers for players, metadata and private fields. Motion Desk can turn a supported subset into editable vector layers. Because that conversion is not lossless, it shows you the differences first.

Open the file

Open Motion Desk from Flipline's rail (or /app#motion) and choose Open motion or Lottie. Select a .json Lottie file of up to 2 MB. Native Motion Desk projects (.flipline-motion.json) open directly. A #motion= link containing Lottie data shows the same review.

Read the review

If the file uses the supported 2D shape subset, the Review Lottie import dialog lists what the editable project will not keep:

  • Transforms are sampled at whole frames, so original keyframe curves and motion between frames can change.
  • Shapes and groups become editable paths without their original structure.
  • Preview background and looping use Motion Desk defaults.
  • When the animation does not start at frame 0, the timeline is shifted so its first frame becomes frame 0. The dialog names the original start frame.
  • Source metadata, timeline markers and private or application-specific fields are left out; each of these lines only appears when the file contains them.
  • Player-specific interactivity is never carried over.

Choose Import as editable animation to continue, or Cancel (or Esc) to keep your current project untouched. Before replacing the project, Motion Desk saves the current one to its recent list. If you edit the open project while the review is showing, the import stops with a message instead of overwriting your change; open the file again.

When a file is not supported

Files outside the subset (for example with expressions, image assets, precompositions, text, effects, masks or 3D layers) open the inspection report instead: it lists the unsupported features and offers a compact JSON download. Expressions are never run and no assets are fetched.

Keep the original

The imported project is a new, simplified animation. Save it with Save motion project, and keep the original Lottie file for work in a full Lottie editor or for the player that uses its markers. Export writes a new Lottie JSON from the Motion Desk project; it does not restore the left-out data.
