Tutorial 11 of 11
Draw with symmetry, a stabilizer, a light table and perspective guides
Beginner 6 min
Mirror strokes across the canvas, smooth freehand lines, pin a reference drawing and plan a scene with a perspective guide.
Flipline's drawing board has a few quiet helpers for balanced, steady drawings. They change how new marks are made, not the marks you already have, and they never appear in exports.
Mirror your strokes
Choose Pencil, Eraser, Line, Rectangle or Ellipse in the tool rail. The properties panel now shows Drawing assistants. Under Symmetry, choose:
- Vertical mirror to reflect each stroke across the vertical center line,
- Horizontal mirror to reflect it from top to bottom,
- Both axes for four-way symmetry, or Off.
Dashed guide lines mark the axes while you draw. They are workspace guides only: PNG, GIF, video and every other export leave them out. Each reflected copy is an ordinary, independent mark on the current layer, so you can choose Select later and move, recolor or delete one copy without touching the others. Undo removes every copy made by the last gesture together. A stroke drawn exactly on an axis does not create duplicate marks.
Symmetry still respects the drawing limits: one drawing layer holds at most 500 marks, so with Both axes each gesture uses four of them.
Smooth a shaky line
Under Stroke stabilizer, choose Light, Medium or Strong. The stabilizer smooths the points in the middle of a pencil or eraser stroke while keeping the exact start and end where you put them. Stronger settings follow your hand more slowly, which helps with long curves drawn with a mouse or touchpad. Pen pressure from a stylus is still recorded with every point. Choose Off for a direct response.
Symmetry and stabilizer choices are remembered in this browser; they are not stored in the project file. If you switch to another window in the middle of a stroke, Flipline cancels that stroke and restores the drawing.
Pin a light-table reference
Onion skins show the drawings right before and after the current one. To trace over any other drawing, find Drawing & playback in the properties panel and choose it under Light table reference. Adjust Light table opacity until the reference is just visible.
The pinned drawing appears faintly beneath the drawing you edit, even if it is far away on the timeline. It follows that drawing when you reorder the timeline, hides while you edit the pinned drawing itself and while the animation plays, and never appears in exports. Choose None to remove it. The choice resets when you open another project.
Plan a scene with a perspective guide
At the bottom of the properties panel, choose Drawing & animation tools, then Perspective Guide Generator. Set the canvas size, the horizon height and one or two vanishing points as percentages; points may lie outside the canvas. The tool draws rays from each point, clips them to the canvas and offers the guide as a transparent SVG download.
Use the SVG as a reference layer in an illustration app, or print it as an underlay for paper sketches. It is a static guide: it does not snap or bend your strokes. The same tool is available to scripts and AI agents through the JSON API and MCP.
Keep your work
Mirrored and stabilized strokes are normal editable marks, so Save project keeps all of them in the .flipline.json file. Download a project file now and then: browser storage can be cleared.
