Tutorial 9 of 11
Build a comic page with panels, balloons and screentones
Intermediate 8 min
Arrange artwork into a page, add dialogue and export editable comic projects or finished pages.
Open Comic Desk from Flipline's rail, or visit /app#comic. Try The small expedition or Four quiet beats. Comic Desk has its own projects, history and five recent pages on this device.
Arrange the panels
New comic page offers portrait, A5 at 150 DPI, vertical-strip and landscape presets. Choose rows and columns, then create the page. You can have up to twelve panels. Page and print settings controls the pixel dimensions, DPI, safe margin, gutter, border and reading direction.
Select a panel from the page or reading-order list. Drag it to move, or use exact X/Y/width/height fields. Split into columns or rows uses the current gutter. Overlapping panels follow their stack order; reading numbers follow spatial rows and the chosen left-to-right or right-to-left direction. Guides are omitted from page exports.
Bring your artwork
Choose Import panel image to place a PNG, JPEG or WebP in the selected panel. The editor resizes large images and embeds a PNG snapshot. Contain preserves the whole source; Cover fills the panel. Zoom and pan crop the source inside the panel.
Copy current drawing takes a transparent snapshot from Flipline's drawing board. Fill panels from drawings copies the first drawings into panels in reading order. These actions keep the source drawing project intact. Keep its original file for painting changes, then copy a new snapshot when ready.
The authored examples use vector staging from Flipline's shared Story Desk renderer. You can retain that art, clear it, or replace it with your own images.
Add a voice and a tone
Add Speech balloon, Thought balloon or Caption box. Select it from the page or list, edit its text, move its body and tail, choose colors and adjust lettering size. Fit lettering reduces the size down to 12 px. If text still does not fit, enlarge the balloon or shorten it. Overflow blocks SVG, PNG and print exports; project and lettering CSV downloads stay available.
Choose Dots, Lines or Crosshatch as Tone pattern under Panel screentone. Tone pitch sets the repeating cell size; Tone coverage sets the nominal ink area. Tone above artwork changes the compositing order. Download panel tone SVG saves a vector swatch, and Save panel tone recipe keeps the settings for another page; open the recipe with Open comic project. Importing it preserves nominal lines per inch when the page DPI differs; unsupported pitch conversion is rejected rather than clamped.
Export and keep editing
Save comic project downloads a .flipline-comic.json file for editable panels, art, balloons and tones; Recent comic pages reopens one of the last five pages from this device. SVG retains vector ink and patterns and uses physical millimetre dimensions from page DPI. PNG uses the exact page pixel dimensions; set its print resolution in your destination app if needed. Lettering CSV lists the complete dialogue in reading order. Undo and Redo cover every page edit, and Comic Desk help lists the keyboard shortcuts.
Open comic print view opens the clean SVG in a new tab; use the browser's Print command for paper or PDF. Review fonts, margins and printer scaling. System-font wrapping is approximate, and fonts are not embedded.
Limits: twelve panels, thirty-six balloons, six megapixels per page, 2 MP per PNG reference, 8 MP total references and six million embedded characters. Comic files are capped at 12 MB. There is no MediBang file import, CMYK conversion or cloud collaboration.
